How We Fix It
We start by letting the door down slow and securing it, because a door with a broken cable is being held by one side only and can rack sideways in the track if you keep running the opener.
Find what failed first
Once it's safe, we check whether the drum, the bottom bracket, or the cable itself is what let go - a cable can snap clean at a frayed point, or it can slip off a worn drum groove and bunch up, which looks like the same problem but isn't.
Drum grooving means replacement
For straight snaps we replace the cable and inspect the pulley and drum for grooving that would chew through a new one fast. For a cable that's unspooled from a worn drum, the drum gets replaced too, not just rewound, because a grooved drum will shred the next cable on the same schedule.
Full cycle before closing
We test the door through a full open-close cycle under its normal spring tension before we call it done, since a cable job that looks fine on a half-cycle can bind once the door's fully up.

How Long It Takes
A snapped or frayed cable is a same-visit repair once a truck is on your driveway. We travel from Surprise, about 19 miles to reach Tolleson, so we don't advertise a fixed arrival window the way a shop with a depot around the corner might. What we can tell you is that the repair itself, once we're there, doesn't drag out: pulling the old cable, checking the drum and track for wear, winding a new one on, and testing the door under load is routine work, not exploratory surgery, unless the cable took the spring or the opener with it on the way out.
If your door is a double-wide with both cables original to the house, we'll usually replace them as a pair even if only one broke. A cable that's lasted since 2001 has a twin on the other side carrying the same mileage, and coming back out for the second failure a few months later costs you more than doing both now.
What Causes It Around Here
Most houses in Tolleson were built between 1979 and 2005, with the median landing right around 2001, which means a lot of original lift cable out there is now old enough to be past its working life even if it's never been touched. Galvanized cable doesn't last forever - the zinc coating thins with each cycle, and in a stretch of summers running well into severe heat territory, that coating breaks down faster than it would somewhere milder, leaving bare steel wire to rust and fray at the drum end.
The other common cause is a worn drum rather than a bad cable. A drum that's been grooved by two decades of the same cable finally lets the cable slip or saw through, and replacing just the cable on a chewed-up drum buys you a few months before the next call. On a door this age, checking the drum while we're in there is standard, not an upsell.
The Symptom
The door drops crooked on one side, hangs at an angle in the opening, or comes off the track entirely when the opener tries to pull it up and only one cable is still attached.
Quiet fraying precedes failure
Sometimes it's quieter than that - a cable frays strand by strand near the drum and you hear a new grinding or popping sound for weeks before it finally lets go on an ordinary Tuesday.
Uneven movement means halt
Either way, don't keep running the opener once you notice the door isn't level or isn't moving evenly. A door with one working cable can jump the track, bend a panel, or drop the whole thing, and that turns a cable repair into a door replacement.
Stocked Parts
We carry standard lift cable in the gauges that fit the torsion and extension setups common on Tolleson's 2000s-era doors, along with matching drums, since the two usually need to go together when a drum is the root cause. Galvanized cable is what we stock for most jobs; it's what came standard on doors built in this window and it holds up fine once replaced.
What we don't carry on the truck is anything custom - a non-standard track width or an older low-headroom setup from before this neighborhood was built out would need a parts order, and we'll tell you straight if that's what we're looking at rather than jury-rig something that won't last.
