How We Fix It
A broken torsion spring gets unwound, pulled off the shaft, and replaced with a matched pair rated to the door's actual weight - we don't run a single spring where the door was engineered for two, even if that's what's on there now.
Safety cables for extensions
Extension springs get swapped with new safety cables run through them, since a snapped extension spring without a cable is how people get hurt. Either way we check the cones, bearing plates, and drums while the shaft is bare, because replacing a $40 spring and leaving a worn cone to fail next month doesn't do you any favors.
Manual balance test
Once the new springs are on, we balance the door by hand - disconnect the opener, lift it to waist height, and see if it holds. If it drifts up or crashes down, the spring tension isn't right yet and we adjust before we leave, not after you call back.

How Long It Takes
Tolleson sits 19 miles from our shop in Surprise, which is the longest run we make of any town on our list. That distance is the first thing to understand about how a spring call here actually works: we're not dispatching from three streets over, we're driving across the valley. We don't advertise a response window for Tolleson because we'd be guessing, and a guess that's wrong is worse than no promise at all. What we can tell you is that a broken spring call gets scheduled, not squeezed in as a drive-by, and the 19 miles means we plan the route before we load the truck rather than figure it out on the way. If your door is stuck shut with the car inside, say so when you call - that changes how we stack the day, even from this far out.
We'd rather tell you the truth about the drive than promise a same-hour arrival we can't back up from Surprise.
What Causes It Around Here
Springs fail from cycle count and heat, and both work against you in this part of the valley. F3-level summer heat does two things to a spring: it thins the lubricating oil faster than it would in a milder climate, and it accelerates metal fatigue on steel that's already flexing thousands of times a year. A spring rated for 10,000 cycles doesn't care what year it is, but a door in constant summer heat tends to hit that number sooner than one in a cooler region. With most of this area's housing built between 1979 and 2005, a lot of these doors are running original or first-replacement springs that are well past a reasonable service life, even if they haven't snapped yet. We don't sell a spring change as preventive maintenance unless you ask - but if your spring's old and you're already having us out, replacing it before it fails saves you the dead-door morning later.
The Symptom
The door won't open, or it opens two inches and the opener strains and gives up - that's a broken spring nine times out of ten, not a motor problem.
Visual spring type check
Look up at the spring above the door: if it's torsion (a single shaft with one or two springs running across the top), a clean gap in the coil tells you it's snapped.
Slack cable signals extensions
If you've got two springs running along the sides above the horizontal track instead, that's extension spring setup, and a broken one usually shows as a hanging, slack cable instead of an open gap.
Skip manual forcing
Either way, don't pull the emergency release and try to force the door by hand - without spring tension a standard steel door weighs more than most people expect, and it can come down fast once it's moving.
Stocked Parts
Tolleson's housing here runs newer than a lot of the towns we cover - this area, like the rest of the service territory, was mostly built out from 1979 through 2005, with the median home dating to 2001. That means standard torsion spring sizes on standard torsion hardware, not the oddball side-mount setups you find on older stock elsewhere. We carry the common torsion and extension spring sizes that match 1990s-and-2000s garage door hardware on the truck, so a straightforward spring swap usually doesn't turn into a special order. Where it does slow down is unusual door weights - heavier insulated doors or oversized two-car doors sometimes take a spring size we have to order in, and we'll tell you that up front rather than make you wait at home for a part that isn't coming.
